A modest renaissance

After COVID, a missed tender opportunity, and changes in recurring revenue, it was time for reflection and revitalization at Compaan. A fresh start and renewed energy were high on their wish list. Enter Julie and Koen.

The customer

Compaan is a social enterprise that empowers people with underutilized talent and integrates them into the labor market in a sustainable way.

The question

Compaan needed a new strategy—a compass to navigate the future with confidence. To remain resilient in a changing environment, its positioning needed to be sharper and its offerings more focused. Early in the process, it also quickly became clear that the foundation needed to be redefined and refined. The organization’s “why” needed to be reintroduced into everyone’s vocabulary in clear, straightforward language.

The Process & the Impact

In the early stages, we felt the tug-of-war between paralysis and individual commitment. Our focus on each participant’s drive, and taking the external context into account—movements and trends in the market, the sector, and macroeconomic policy—clearly pointed the way forward, out of inertia. The biggest breakthrough came from digging deep into Compaan’s customer segments, product offerings, and business model. That’s where the future challenges became very clear.

Based on its strategy and financial results, Compaan is now moving toward a revised market offering, a revamped organizational structure, and strengthened partnerships.

Their agenda now consists of effective project monitoring, a clearer innovation framework, and regular adjustments based on the right impact and financial indicators. The formula for sustainable innovation.

The challenge

Getting everyone on the same page—or, rather, getting everyone moving in the same direction—is never a given, not even at Compaan. When you work from the outside in, you’re definitely more likely to detect blind spots and arrive at a shared understanding of reality. That approach is paying off. Objectivity and good data are also crucial for evaluating, balancing, and preventing an imbalance between innovation and impact.

“It was wonderful to see how a stagnant organization can take steps toward a dynamic future—one built on clarity and a clear “why.””

The collaboration

Despite major changes—a change in leadership, a change in financial management—we found Compaan to be a tenacious and committed partner. Several people stepped up during the chaotic phase, and their strength was inspiring. The commitment now feels complete, and Compaan is ready to move forward again.

“With S&L’s guidance, we gain the expertise we need. Even if you know how to do it yourself, it’s difficult to go through this process on your own. ”

3 Tips from Liesbet Vercamer

  • Keep believing in your project, don't be afraid to acknowledge what you can't do on your own, and ask for help.

  • Don't make a quick decision when you're unsure. It will take a little more time and discussion. Trust the process.

  • Stick to the plan. If you find yourself getting caught up in the daily grind, pull out your plan and follow it.
