A System Pioneer's Upgrade

The Waxing Moon: Once a pioneer, always a pioneer? Only if the strategy stays up-to-date and the team stays in sync—something Peter and Kim are happy to help with. And with the necessary courage—but there’s no shortage of that.

The customer

De Wassende Maan is more than just an organic farm: since 1979, they have been pioneers in biodynamic agriculture that promotes quality of life.

The question

From the very start, De Wassende Maan was a bold move in a sector that was anything but straightforward. Since then, the sector of short-chain agricultural businesses hasn’t gotten any easier. Inflation, declining purchasing power, and a race to the bottom among supermarkets—it’s no picnic. Yet the Wassende Maan remains a success story, perhaps precisely because of that initial courage and daring. Their story is a shining example of an alternative food system. They feel that responsibility and are committed to fulfilling that role with care in the future as well.

Deliverables and Challenges

The agricultural sector demands a great deal of attention to the here and now, leaving little time to take a step back. The decision to focus on strategy was therefore a very deliberate one. The team came together, all questions were welcome, and S&L provided an unbiased outside perspective. What plans will get us back on track? future-proof ? Which concepts still hold up, and is our positioning still on point? Does the business model deliver the intended impact, and can the financial picture withstand external pressures? In addressing all these questions, they sought a major upgrade to their strategy—and found it in a renewed collective ambition.

A welcome side effect was the strengthened cohesion within the team. Everyone was once again fully aware of what, how, and why—a well-oiled machine. By brainstorming together, the connection between the Board of Directors and the team also gained new momentum. Everyone was ready to surpass themselves once again. There is the courage to continue pioneering, to be entrepreneurial, and to involve the cooperative members even more. In short, the ideal positioning and go-to-market strategy. The renewed impact strategy enables them to strengthen the organization and better achieve the long-awaited transformation of the food system.

““A client who’s already doing very well—in what is certainly a challenging industry—and who wants to do even better—that’s truly sustainable pioneering work.” ”
